This is an exceptionally intelligent YA book that does not spare the emotions of love and grief and the heavy weight of responsibility. The author did a fantastic job of minding the formal speech and thought patterns of Helen's background and contrasting them with the jarring reality of present day, all while ruminating on human existence and forgiveness and the value of a life well-lived.

Is this really being shelved in young adult fiction? Laura Whitcomb's writing is deliciously wordy, witty, and wonderful, and the story surprisingly complex with many mature themes. The paperback will be available in fall 2010.Ĥ.5 stars Wow. The Fetch was #5 in the top ten of Children's Indie Next List 2009 and was published as an audio book by Recorded Books. In 2005 ACSOL was also chosen for the "Discover Great New Writers" program at Barnes & Noble bookstores. The audio book is published by Listening Library. ACSOL will be published in Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, German, Polish, and Turkish. The movie rights for A Certain Slant of Light sold to Kristin Hahn, producer of The Departed. She lives in Wilsonville, Oregon, with her son Robinson. In her spare time she sings madrigals with the Sherwood Renaissance Singers and is the props mistress for the Portland Christmas Revels. She has won three Kay Snow Awards and was once runner up in the Bulwer-Lytton writing contest for the best first sentence of the worst Science Fiction novel never written. She has taught Language Arts in California and Hawaii.
